This is an A3 handmade artists book that illustrates Rupert Brooke’s poem, ‘Pine Trees and the Sky: Evening’ (1907) with an applied theme of homesickness. Celtics believed that the Pine tree was a symbol of dispelling negativity and reminding one of their blessings, as well as a sign that winter does not last forever. For me, Pine trees are symbolic of the idea of ‘home,’ and included within my work, gives it a ‘sense of place’, making it in autobiographical piece. The portraits within the artist book are of my little sister, which is also significant to the notion of my own homesickness. When thinking of the trees and my family, I no longer feel sad, but am reminded of my blessings, similar to the emotions Brooke experiences in his poem. Collage has been used to capture an ethereal tone with vintage ephemera. This also gives a nostalgic touch to the book, which has been produced in the style of an old photo album.
